When sci fi narratives discover synthetic intelligence approaching a human degree of sentience, they have a tendency to give attention to the unfavorable (Skynet, anybody?). Not so with Spike Jonze’s new film Her, a melancholy examination of what it means to be human in an more and more inhuman world. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as a social recluse who finds a good friend in his smartphone’s Siri-impressed assistant, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). The connection blossoms in a method that manages to be each heartfelt and deeply unsettling, and Jonze’s tackle a kind of technological animism feels fairly culturally resonant.
